Kansas City is headquarters to 4 Fortune 500 companies (H&R Block, Embarq Corporation, SPrint Nextel Corporation, and YRC Worldwide Inc.) and 5 additional Fortune 1000 corporations (interstate Bakeries Coporation, Great Plains Energy, Aquila, Inc., AMC Theaters, and DST Systems). Hallmark Cards is also a large provider, but cannot be included because the Hall family privately owns it.

There are numerous agricultural companies that operate out of the city, and the Kansas City Board of Trade is one of the principal trading centers for hardred winter wheat.

Kansas City is also home to two major business magazines, The Kansas City Business Journal and Ingram's Magazine, as well as a number of other small publications that include the Independent, a local society journal.
